Foundation established: new university named Tampere New University

At the moment it seems that the name of the new higher education institution will be Tampere New University. Tampereen uusi yliopisto in Finnish. The matter was disclosed on April 20th at the event where the charter of Tampere’s university foundation was signed.
”The name has been under consideration since last summer and the beloved child has had many names. With a name like Tampere New University you have to repeatedly explain where the new comes from. It is a sort of play-on-words,” says Risto Siilasmaa from Teknologiateollisuus ry. Teknologiateollisuus is one of the founding parties.

The name suggestion is a joint proposal put forth by the three higher education institutions, the University of Tampere, Tampere Technical University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences, but it needs the approval of the Parliament together with the amendments to the Universities Act for the Tampere 3 project. TUT’s board already suggested the name in September 2016.
There were several speeches given at Raatihuone, from for example Chair of the Board of the University of Tampere Kari Neilimo, Mayor of Tampere Anna-Kaisa Ikonen and Minister of Education and Culture Sanni Grahn-Laaksonen. In their speeches, all of them emphasized that signing the charter is an important waypoint on the journey towards the new higher education institution.
The next phase of the process is selecting the board for the new university and a nomination committee has already been appointed for this purpose. Tampere New University is scheduled to commence on 1.1.2019.
